REMC stands for Regional Educational Media Center.
REMCs were created by the Michigan State Legislature in 1970 to serve the elementary and secondary schools in Michigan, and enhance education opportunities for Michigan’s children.
There are currently 28 REMC centers in Michigan. REMC 1, 21, and 22 are located in the Upper Peninsula. REMC1 serves the Copper Country Intermediate School District and the Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District, and is located in the Copper Country Intermediate School District building at 811 Hecla Street in Hancock. Within the five counties: Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon, REMC1 serves approximately 9,100 students and 700 educators in public and private schools.
The role of REMC1 is to provide technology and instructional materials support to local school districts. REMC1 maintains a media collection of over 25,000 items, coordinates Distance Learning Education across the five county region, provides Internet access to staff and students, as well as technical support and technology integration services.
Each REMC has a Board which sets policy, and an Advisory Council which advises the REMC Board and the REMC Director. The Advisory Council is composed of representatives from each school district belonging to the REMC. The Superintendents Roundtables serve this function for REMC1.
